Out walking today, I had what I thought was a great moment for a book I’ve been working on for a while.
And as is my wont, and as I preach to others, I opened OneNote on my phone and “wrote it down,” which these days often means turning on the speech-to-text facility and speaking clearly. (Egg freckles. IYKYK.)
Later, I got out my computer and searched for the perfect place to insert this brilliant moment.
Oh.
I’d already written it, almost exactly as I’d (re) envisioned the scene.
I was more than anything disappointed. Not in myself, because if I didn’t make mistakes I wouldn’t make much of anything, but because this book needs a few (or more than a few) more brilliant moments, character insights, and pause-to-think reflections on the real world. And I thought I’d found a way to make at least one page sparkle.
It’ll come. I’ll get there.
Just not today.
By the way, Google gets “egg freckles” right. Bing has CoPilot offer a long essay about spots on eggs. (The originals are archived here, but take a long time to load).
